1193.41(h) Operable without speech

Explanation

Provide at least one mode that does not require user speech.

Strategies

1. Many individuals cannot speak or speak clearly. Products which require speech in order to operate them should also provide an alternate way to achieve the same function.

2. Some strategies to achieve this include:

  1. Provide an alternate mechanism for achieving all of the functions which are controlled by speech. If a product includes speech identification or verification, provide an alternate mechanism for this function as well.
  2. Include individuals who are deaf or who have speech disabilities in the subject populations that are used to develop voice recognition algorithms, so that the algorithms will better accommodate a wider range of speech patterns.

Products that Address this Guideline

At present no products that include speech recognition lack other modes of input, such as a keypad or keyboard.
