About the ADA Standards for Transportation Facilities

transit stationUnder the ADA, the Department of Transportation (DOT) issues and enforces accessibility standards for transportation facilities that are based on the Board’s ADA Accessibility Guidelines.  DOT’s current ADA Standards (2006) are consistent with updated ADA guidelines the Board issued in 2004.

DOT’s ADA standards apply to facilities used by state and local governments to provide designated public transportation services, including bus stops and stations, and rail stations.  They apply to new construction and alterations.  The current standards became effective November 29, 2006.
