Background

In September 2002, the Board published guidelines for recreation facilities as a supplement to the original ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).  These guidelines were developed based on recommendations from the Board’s Recreation Access Advisory Committee and made available for public comment.  Supplementary guidelines specific to play areas were issued separately in October 2000 based on recommendations from a regulatory negotiation committee. The guidelines for recreation facilities and play areas were integrated into the the Board's updated ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines (2004) and are included in the current edition of the ADA and ABA standards.
