ICT Refresh IconJoint update of the §508 Standards and the §255 Guidelines

The Board organized the Telecommunications and Electronic and Information Technology Advisory Committee (TEITAC) to review its Section 508 standards and Telecommunications Act Accessibility Guidelines and to recommend changes on how they should be updated.  The TEITAC issued its report to the Board in April 2008.

The Board has released for public comment a proposed rule based on the committee’s recommendations as well as earlier drafts of the rule.

Timeline:

  • February 3, 1998 - Board publishes original Telecommunications Act Accessibility Guidelines
  • December 21, 2000 - Board issues original Section 508 Standards
  • July 6, 2006 - Board names Telecommunications and Electronic and Information Technology Advisory Committee
  • April 3, 2008 - Advisory Committee presents final report to the Board
  • March 22, 2010 - Board releases draft ICT proposed rule to update the Section 508 standards and Telecommunications Act guidelines
  • December 8, 2011 - Revised draft proposed rule released for comment
  • February 23, 2014 - Proposed rule submitted to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review (OMB has 90 days to complete its review) 
  • February 18, 2015 - Board releases ICT proposed rule for public comment (published in the Federal Resister May 27, 2015)
  • May 28, 2015 - Deadline for public comments on the ICT proposed rule
