The Simplicity Prescription Bottle

Simplicity Prescription BottleI appreciate the opportunity to share this simple but extraordinary bottle concept with you. Six years ago, I began thinking about the basic concept for the shape and function of this bottle. In March of 2011, I teamed up with a product development company and the Simplicity (Patent Pending) was born. The two prototype bottles that you are examining were produced on a 3D plastic printer and are intended only to convey the concept, not a finished product.

I have seen the need for the Simplicity from two perspectives. One, professionally, as a provider of direct services to older individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The second as someone with Multiple Sclerosis who has lost the full function of his hands.

The Simplicity aims to be an important part of what will be a multifaceted solution to the task of creating accessible prescription materials. I look forward to being able to continue (with your input and suggestions) to refine the Simplicity. The key benefits of Simplicity:

  1. It has large flat surfaces upon which labels may be placed. Unlike curved surfaces, it can easily be read with a magnifier. There is plenty of room for 18 point type.
  2. The large bottle cap opens easily, with a ¼ turn, and snaps back on to address the limited mobility that often accompanies vision impairment among the older population.
  3. It is comfortable to grasp, will not roll away if tipped or dropped and can be stacked.
  4. A "flow restriction" ring (sized to fit various pills) is snapped in place by the pharmacist for better control during pouring by the customer. The ring also limits spillage, should the bottle be inadvertently tipped or dropped.
  5. The bottle’s design easily accommodates the integration of audio devices and RFID chips.
  6. The Simplicity bottle can be filled using pharmacy equipment already in place.
  7. The bottle has been designed for low manufacturing cost, given the long list of benefits.

I believe the Simplicity can be the vehicle or foundation upon which many of the ideas put forth by this working group (large print options, voice output, Braille, etc.) can be brought quickly to market and help millions. I am asking for the opportunity to collaborate with this team to help you achieve your goals.
